Most people do not want to know the will of God in order to do it, they want to know it in order to consider it. - Anonymous
So often we pray and ask God to show us His will for our lives, to point out to us what way we should go. God may show us very plainly what He wants for us to do, or it may be in more subtle ways. However He tells us, we still hum and haw over it, working it out in our mind to try and figure out if it is the best way to turn. We don't have immediate trust in God, that He knows what is best for our lives.
Our message on Sunday was on hearing God's Word and doing it. It was a challenge to me as so often it is easy to go through our days, reading God's Word and leaving it at that. It doesn't change our lives, we don't go out and DO what we read. If God wanted us to just read the Bible for sheer entertainment He would have told us, maybe added some make believe to it as well.
Ezekiel 33: 30-32 are some very powerful, thought-provoking verses.
30Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.31And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.32And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
We find out about some famous, great speaker that is coming to our area and we get a group together to hear the Word of God preached to a crowd of people. The speaker has a very thought-provoking message filled with challenges that we listen to with open ears. After the message, we meet with the speaker to thank him for coming to share with us. We tell him how his message has greatly challenged us to strengthen and grow in our relationship with God. We go out for coffee with our friends, get talking about sports, cars, people, etc and immediately forget the challenges that had so filled us minutes before. Where was that commitment, that re-dedication that we had just talked about? It's gone, gone to our old 'easy' way of life.
Oh God, help me. Help me to hear Your Words and DO them. Give me the courage to know Your will and DO as you ask. God, You alone can give me the wisdom, strength, and courage I need to follow You and You alone. Unstop my ears so that I can hear, unleash my heart so I desire to DO, untie my hands and feet so I can go where You want me to go. God, I love You and praise You.
